HCG 66, then 94, then 89--baby is fine!

Postby happymom » Sat Dec 29, 2007 11:40 pm

I wanted to post my story to give some hope to any other woman out there who is going through what I went through. I did IVF and 10 days after my day 3 transfer my HCG was 66. Two days later it was 94, and my RE said the pregnancy was now in danger. I was having a light brown flow (much more than spotting), and on this day I developed a fever of 102.6. Everyone in my house was sick. Two days later the HCG was 89 and my RE said there was very little hope. It turns out I had pneumonia and I started antibiotics. The fever broke and the bleeding stopped. Five days after my HCG of 89 I had blood drawn again and it was now 196. My RE told me to stop my progesterone shots because it was not a viable pregnancy. I continued the shots, and 9 days later it was over 5000. I came into his office for an ultrasound and everything was perfect. Three more ultrasounds after that, the last being at 13 weeks, were also all perfect. Needless to say, I was in agony the whole time until that first ultrasound. I scoured this site looking for hope and I found one woman who had low and slow rising HCG who had a successful pregnancy. I kept telling her story over and over to myself to maintain some hope. My RE said he's never seen anything like it. He's really a very kind doctor, and he said after my experience, if he ever sees a woman with similar HCG's, he won't give up hope for the pregnancy.

I love happy endings :) We've had a number of women on this site have hCGs slow, plateau or even decline early in pregnancy and they were fine. We're thinking it is because of dehydration. Apparently not enough fluids can affect levels early on.

Keep us updated on your pregnancy and congrats!

Thank you so much for sharing your story...mine is so similar. I'm really only at the point now where I dont' know/understand what's going on. I'm TTC #1, and this is my first time being pregnant.

14 dpo- +hpt
18 dpo- spotting
20 dpo- bleeding (4 days)/cramps(1 day), beta 25
24 dpo- only spotting, beta 62
26 dpo- I'll go for more blood work

I hope and pray that my story ends like yours. I know that if it does, it will only be explained by a true miracle at the hand of my gracious Heavenly Father.

Hi Kay,

I'm writing you because I read in one of the posts you said dehydration was decrease hcg levels?
Here is my situation and I'm a nervous wreck waiting for results.
Last Thursday March 26th, I got a BFP at 4 weeks. My Dr. said not to be too optimistic since my hcg was really low, only 27. My progesterone was also 27 and she said that was reassuring and I should retest in 1 week.

Over the weekend I had light cramps and light brown spotting. On Monday morning the spotting got a bit heavier (but still light) so I went to the ER.
They retested my hcg levels and said they had gone down to 18 so a definite miscarriage (my progesterone was still high). The Dr. checked my cervix and said it was closed but a m/c was inevitable.

I have been devastated but haven't lost hope. I bought urine pregnancy test that have a high sensitivity (50Miu). They all come back positive! How can I have an hcg of 18 and have a positive test of 50Miu! I called my Dr. to inform her of this so I took another blood test today. The results should be ready tomorrow and she said she will call me.

The day I went to the ER, I hadn't had anything to drink or haven't eaten anything either. I didn't have dinner the night before because I was so nervous too.

Do you think the dehydration had to do with my hcg levels dropping?

Thanks!

Dehydration is always a possible cause especially in very early pregnancy. We've learned here that hCG numbers can do all sorts of weird and wacky things. We really don't put too much stock in them. Let us know what you find out.

I wondered about this possibility. We've been having heat waves in our area and my car doesn't have air conditioning. I try to drink the eight glasses a day of eight ounces each of water recommended, but it's hard to force myself sometimes. When I'm not pregnant, I deliberately drink less water because I have urinary incontinence and water tends to exacerbate the issue. I don't know why ERs wouldn't think to put pregnant women, regardless of the stage of pregnancy, on a re-hydration drip as standard procedure.

This is my first time on this site. My story is a bit long, please bear with me.

I don't have any children and desperately want to be a mom. I had a miscarriage in January 2009. I've been trying to conceive again since Feb. 2009 and I'm 36 years old.

On June 22 I had what I thought was my period (bleeding with clots- not spotting). Over a week after my "period" started I started spotting again. I took a home pregnancy test and it was positive. The next day I had a blood test done and my hcg was 110. Based on my last real period and when the opk showed that I ovulated I should have been 5weeks. The nurse was concerned that the hcg was low and said I should be retested in 2 days. I was sure it was a miscarriage.

Two days later the doctor called and said my levels went up as they should 200+. She said it didn't seem likely that I was 5 weeks and have the levels checked again in a week. In the meantime the spotting stopped and I've been nauseous, tired, gassy, etc. A week later (yesterday) my levels went up to 357 but didn't go up like they are supposed to. I should be 6weeks.

I asked if they checked by progesterone levels and they didn't. I'm still waiting to hear back from the doctor's office about whether they can test my progesterone or possibly just put me on progesterone.

Now I just don't know what to think. Are my levels too low? Have my levels started to drop and the dr can't tell because there was a week between tests? Are my levels still rising? I don't want to give up hope. But I'm so scared that it's another miscarriage....I feel so desperate

Melissa, i am so sorry for your loss. i'm not sure about all the hcg levels and everything, i dont think u can really tell what they are doing unless they are tested every 48 hours. just dont give up yet everything is still working its self out maybe you just aren't as far along as you think you are, it happens more often than you would think. i just had my levels done yesterday and i am 5w2d and its 7,009. but i looked up a chart that said for 5 weeks it could be 18-7340 so it hard to judge. I would just wait it out and ask for hcg test every 48 hours to see what they are doing and also ask for progesterone to be tested, if your dr refuses i would find a new dr.

Is baby ok??

Postby Babymama » Fri Jul 10, 2009 11:22 am

Hi, I'm new to this site. I found it when searching for some answers. I am 9 weeks, 3 days pregnant today. I had an ultrasound done when I was 6 weeks 4 days and saw the baby. It wasn't quite an embryo yet, but we could see the heart activity. I started doing some light spotting last Friday so I called my doctor and they did a blood draw to check my hcg level. On Monday it was at 166,998. They did a comparison yesterday (Thursday) and it had dropped to 140,000. They prepared me for the worst as they couldn't find a heartbeat either. I was sent to the hospital for an internal u/s and we found the baby with healthy heartrate of 171. My doctor said that the u/s is more reliable than the blood, but what would cause it to drop like that? I'm still cramping and spotting very lightly. Should I still be worried after two internal u/s and a heartbeat on both?

slow rising hcg, then dropping

Postby Carolemelyn » Tue Jul 14, 2009 9:19 am

Hi here is my story, if anyone has any help please let me know....

We have been ttc for a year. I had two miscarriages due to low progesterone....I decided to take an herb called Vitex to help increase progesterone naturally and it seemed to be helping. My LMP was May 25, I had a pos preg test on Friday June 19 3 days before next period due. had some slight tugging cramping in uterus and hoped it was normal, then SundayJune 28th my nephew kicked me in the stomach and i started cramping, my pregnancy symptoms went way, and I had slight pinkish discharge, I went into the doc on Wed July 1st my hcg was 146 and prog 7.5.
the Doc gave me 250mg prog shot and next morning I started to bleed. Since bleeding is a side effect of prog supp I wasn't too concerned.

On Monday July 6th my hcg was 268, US on Tuesday showed Gest Sac and congruent with hcg levels......bleeding had stopped over the weekend and now only brown discharge, doc switched me to prog supp 100mg 2x day, on Thurs July 9 hcg was only 282........spotting completly stopped.....

Doc said it didn't look like a viable pregnancy and to stop taking prog. Well I had some old 200mg prog suppositories from last miscarriage and they don't expire until Aug so I took those 2x day instead.....on Monday July 13th hcg was 264......droped 18 points......doc again has told me to stop taking progesterone..... however i am uneasy and I am going to ask for another hcg this Thursday to make sure it is going down.....

My question is this, are my levels way too low anyway even if hcg does go back up? and if I have a second hcg drop should i stop prog?

Hi there, I'm a new comer to this site. I discovered that whenever looking for some advice. My spouse and i started out accomplishing some mild picking out very last Feb 5th well, i referred to as my own health practitioner and in addition they does a new blood bring to check on my own perte de poids levels. In Mon it turned out from 165, 998. These people does an evaluation last night (Thursday) plus it got slipped to 140, 000. These people geared up us for that most severe because they could not get a pulse either. My health practitioner explained the u/s is usually a lot more reputable than the blood, but precisely what might lead it to drop prefer that? I'm even now cramping pains as well as picking out extremely casually. Can i nevertheless be worried right after two central u/s along with a pulse on equally?

LMP 7/9/12
Pos HPT 8/4/12
Mon 8/6/12 calculated 4 weeks with the following labs: HCG 60 and Progesterone slightly over 10
Tues 8/7/12 started on Progesterone
Wed 8/8/12 (44 hours after first lab draw) Progesterone 19 but HCG only 73
Thurs 8/9/12 (24 hrs after last lab) HCG 82

I have a 8 year old who I had no problems with and no prior MC. Natural preg with no iui or ivf after ttc for 14 mos. If hcg isnt up quite a bit tomorrow RE wants to stop progesterone. Im not so sure Im comfortable with that until I have an ultrasound to confirm or a rapidly decreasing HCG. I know the HCG isnt doubling but its still going up and seems to have picked up speed in the last 24 hours. I know people say to follow your gut but its getting hard to tell the difference between my gut and total fear right now. Of course I have a bad feeling now when the RE and my regular OB say it isnt looking good. I could really use some advise and encouragement right now. Thanks and baby dust to all!!

Mrsedwards1,
827 is fine for 4 weeks. It's more important that they check every 48 hours to see that it's doubling. If you said it was rechecked and only slightly higher, at least it's going up. Always keep your hope! I would ask for an ultrasound to check the development.
Let us know what happens!

Hi,
I have had two miscarriages, September 2011 at 10 weeks, and February at 5 and 1/2 weeks. I am currently pregnant for the third time, under the care of a fertility specialist. My hcg has been doing some funny stuff. I haven't been able to find any stories quite like mine.
So, on Monday-8/6 I got a positive home test :)8 , I called my doctor and they had me come in that day to take hcg and prog. HCG-68, Prog-16.8 (better than either previous pregnancy). I went back Wednesday to repeat betas. HCG-38 :*( This was exactly what happened with miscarriage #2 . I pulled away, didn't eat dinner, and waited for the bleeding to stat. I felt so awful. My doctor wanted me to come in again Friday to repeat the test to be sure the HCG was almost gone. I almost cancelled my appointment-why do I want to pay to have someone tell me my numbers went down? I was just upset still. Well, I decided that if I hadn't started bleeding, I would go. No blood, not a drop! So, I went in on Friday (yesterday) and my HCG was 465!?! 465 would be right on track if I had never even had a drop! I am trying not to be too hopeful with my past, but I feel very confused. I go in on Monday (8/13) to repeat betas and get an ultrasound. They mentioned a possible etopic pregnancy or blighted ovum...I am just hoping that I can see a perfect gestational sac and maybe even a yolk sac! I will be 5 weeks, 1 day so it's not likely that I'll see a fetal pole.
I would love to hear of someone else with a big drop, then a big rise.
Also, has anyone heard of a fluctuating HCG being related to etopic or bo?
Thank you!!

I am really confused with my labs and levels, too. My last period began June 21. I got a very light positive on a home test July 20 and went in for bloodwork. My hcg was 21. On July 23 it was only 23, which obviously they were automatically thinking miscarriage, as I was, because from July 23 until the 27th I was experiencing heavy cramping with a good amount of blood and small clots (but just when I went to the restroom). I have been repeating bloodwork every 2-3 days since. On July 26 it was 46. Then on July 30 it was 156. On August 2 it was 329. August 6 it was 856. August 9 it was 1360. According to my last period, I'd be close to 8 wks. My doctor says you have to go by what your body is saying, which he thinks I'm only approaching 6 weeks. He thinks I ovulated late. We have not seen a sac yet. Last u/s was August 6 and we could not see a sac. I go back for more bloodwork and an u/s on Monday the 13th. For the past 3 days, each morning I have heavy spotting (bright pink) with 1 very small dark clot, but then I have very little spotting throughout each day. My doctor first suspected ectopic. Since I'm not having pain still at this point, he now thinks I'm going to have a miscarriage but from my uterus. He says there's a small chance this could be a viable preg. Anyone have insight, similar situation or know someone with similar patterns? Thank you!
