Yolk Sac Present - Not a Blighted Ovum

Postby Lovinmom » Mon Jun 04, 2007 6:55 am

This resource gives info that there is a yolk sac is present, then a viable embryo is also present. A yolk sac is attached to the fetus and is what nourishes it until the placenta take over. In the terms of the link below, it states that a viable embryo is necessary for yolk sac development. Some of the other information at this site we find to not be consistent of what we have seen here. Such as seeing a heartbeat at specific weeks. That is not always the case and often the heartbeat does not show until later although it may be present but not seen on u/s. Over all, there is some good information. Refer to page 13 (page 17 on pdf format).

From what I understand, there simply isn't a standard diagnostic term for an embryo that fails to develop a heartbeat (or to grow large enough to be seen on u/s)--hence the tendency to call these non-viable pregnancies "blighted ova." IMHO, a true blighted ovum (no yolk sac) and a very early fetal demise are BOTH "real" pregnancies in which the baby's development stops before it has much (or any) anatomical structure. If there's a sac, there was a fertilized egg, and the embryonic growth thereafter is a continuum. So the terminology may not be as important as getting medical professionals and others to recognize that a blighted ovum, by whichever definition, is, for the parents, a lost child.

HELP!

Postby JesusNeverFails » Fri Jan 01, 2010 3:22 pm

Hello. I am 7 weeks 4 days pregnant. I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks 6 days and everything is growing normal, the ges. sac, and the yolk sac. and they think they saw a fetus, but not sure, and no heartbeat. Do I still have a chance? If I have a yolk sac does that mean for sure I have an embryo somewhere and what they saw most likely was an embryo? I only got to see the screen for a split moment, but it looked like the little "blob" was attached to the yolk sac.... is that usually how it is? It looked like a thin cord? Please help. I really want my baby and I can hardly wait for the next ultrasound on Monday.... in three days.Thank you

no foetal pole at 6 weeks..please help !!!!

Postby ssp » Mon Aug 09, 2010 12:45 pm

hi...my LMP was 12th june 2010. i had an u/s(abdominal) done on 04th aug which stated "regular well defined gestation sac and yolk sac, but no foetal pole detected- GA=6 weeks 2 days" . the doctor adviced a TVS (trans vaginal u/s) which was done the next day -on 5th aug. it reported " gravid uterus with single well defined gestational sac and a tiny yolk sac visible, but foetal pole not visible+ strong decidual echoes seen around sac+ GA = 5weeks 6days" and was suggested for a repeat scan after 2 weeks".
i am very tense as i had lost my first baby immediately after delivery due to complications during natural labour last year. i had carried that baby for full term without any problem.
please help me understand if it is normal for the GA to vary as it did with both my scans, and whether everything is normal. i am due to undergo an u/s (tvs) after 10 days.
please help !

ssp - There is always hope. If you want more people to read and respond to your situation and questions though, you should repost this on another discussion, maybe one of the Misdiagnosed Miscarriage discussion? I'm not sure where you would want to put it.
I hope things work out for you. Try and stay positive and keep yourself busy. I know this is hard, I've been there and gone through what I had hoped would be a successful pregnancy that later ended in a miscarriage. The unknown is one of the scariest parts right now, but this too shall pass...
Take care and God Bless.
Keep us posted.
